AMERICAN ASSASSIN (18)
This searing action thriller follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien) a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent to stop a mysterious operative intent on starting a World War in the Middle East. Based on the novel by Vince Flynn, the film is an effective combination of violent action and spy thriller as well as a meditation on revenge. With Taylor Kitsch, Scott Adkins and David Suchet. AMERICAN MADE (15)

Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) directs this highly engaging crime thriller based on true events. Tom Cruise stars as Barry Seal, a pilot for Trans World Airlines who became a drug smuggler for the Colombian Medellin cartel in the 1980s. After being recruited by the notorious drug lords to move shipments of cocaine from Columbia to an airbase in Mena, Arkansas, Seal also becomes involved with the CIA and DEA who are looking for him to provide information on the Columbian's activities while also secretly transporting weapons into South America for them. However, with the cartel continuing to increase their shipments to the US, it's not long before events begin to spiral out of control. Cruise is terrific as the charming and likeable Seal and the film is smart, funny, insightful and controversial all at once.
The excellent supporting cast includes Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright and Jayma Mays. (115 mins)

Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated. Visionary director Christopher Nolan (Inception/The Dark Knight) has created a bold, visceral, intense audience experience that tells three separate stories (land, sea and air) in three different time narratives. The result is a truly powerful spectacle that is also emotionally satisfying with terrific cinematography, sharp editing and a first class ensemble cast that honours the fact-based story.
